DeJuan Jones, is hoping to suit up for the U.S. Men’s National Team next week.

DeJuan Jones has a lot of goals he wants to achieve during his playing career. Next week he’ll have the opportunity to fulfill one of them as he could suit up for the U.S. Men’s National Team.

Jones’ first international call-up came in January 2022 when he participated in a two-week camp in Phoenix, AZ. It was an enjoyable experience for the defender, but it didn’t result in an appearance. One year later, he’s hoping to play for his home country.

“It’s going to be special,” Jones said about potentially earning his first cap. “[I] dreamed of moments like this and for it to be coming true is special, so really looking forward to it.”

The upcoming camp is an interesting one as Jones could play against two of his New England Revolution teammates. The first outing is against Djordje Petrovic and Serbia and the second is against Dylan Borrero and Colombia.

These games have naturally led to some locker-room banter. Jones told media that Petrovic said to him, “0-0 against you guys, no goals against me.”

Playing for the National Team is a huge honor and it’s also an opportunity for Jones to showcase his skills. The 25-year-old noted that playing in Europe is “definitely” a goal of his and he certainly has the potential to do it.

Teammate Andrew Farrell has been impressed by how much Jones has improved since joining the Revs in 2019 via the MLS SuperDraft. Farrell told The Bent Musket that Carles Gil regularly raves about Jones, adding, “When Carles sees it like that, and obviously I see it, [then Jones] is a player to be watching this year.”

“He’s so good,” Farrell said about Jones. “He works so hard. You have to tell him to sometimes not work as hard. He’s played so many games for us, such important games for us.

“He’s going to do some things. He’s going to have a big year. There’s been interest for him, I know, for the past couple of years. I think it proves that he’s one of the best, if not the best, left backs in the league.”

While Jones has been a reliable left back for the Revolution, he thinks the National Team will “probably have me on the right” based on the other players on the roster. Jones, who played midfield in college, is naturally right-footed, though he’s “comfortable on both feet.”

Farrell believes that Jones’ versatility is a big positive. He also mentioned that he’s “always playing through little bumps and nicks, so he’s a warrior.”

Most of all, Jones has an infectious personality that makes him easy to root for.

“It’s so easy to fall in love with him as a player then you get to know him and he’s one of the best people on our team and we have great people on our team. He’s just a kind-hearted person,” Farrell said.

With loads of talent and good people in his corner, 2023 could be a special year for Jones, but he’s not getting too far ahead of himself. While he has plenty of goals he wants to achieve, he’s currently focused on completing a big one next week.

Who knows what will happen after that?

“[I’m] just taking it one step at a time right now,” Jones said. “Excited for the Revs’ season ahead, but you know, getting my first cap with the national team will be very special for me, coming up this next weekend.”

The friendship is just another example of how soccer brings people together

It really is unique how soccer can bring people together. The friendship between New England Revolution teammates Dylan Borrero and Djordje Petrovic is just another example of the connecting bonds the game creates.

Both Petrovic and Borrero arrived in New England midway through the 2022 MLS season. At 23 and 21 years old respectively, they are the future of the Revolution.

After that is where the similarities end with Borrero hailing from Colombia and spending some time in Brasil prior to coming to New England. Petrovic on the other hand was born in Serbia where he played in the domestic league prior to playing in MLS with New England.

But Borrero and Petrovic have become good friends off the pitch. The duo and their partners have been seen going out together and they love to interact on social media.

In a media availability on Thursday, Borrero discussed his relationship with Petrovic.

“Djordje is like a brother to me,” Borrero said. “We get along super well. The language barrier can be a little confusing but we still communicate very well. My girlfriend speaks English so she helps translate for me. We go out together with our girlfriends. Not just on the field but off the field it’s a nice friendship and it’s going to be great for a long time.”

2023 has started off well for Borrero and Petrovic. Both players were called up to their respective national teams. This was a special moment for the Colombian as it’s his first call-up to the senior national team.

“Well first I just want to thank God for the call-up,” Borrero said. “I think, not only what I’ve done here in the United States but also I did in Brazil, were the motives for my selection. I’ve worked really hard to get to this. There’s pressure but I think we’ll know how to manage it. We’re strong mentally and that’s what matters.”

Borrero and Petrovic will be preparing as their national teams prepare to face the United States Men’s National Team which features their teammate DeJuan Jones.

“I think it’s a nice experience. I’m happy that DeJuan and Djordje have played very well and they deserve this so much,” Borrero stated. “This year, not just for me personally but for the team as a whole, will hopefully be a great year. The team has worked hard to hopefully reach the playoffs and not begin the offseason so soon like we did last season. I think we’ll have a good year.”

After a difficult start to his MLS career in 2022, everything seems to be going Borrero’s way in 2023. He will be heading into the start of the MLS season feeling great.

The 21-year-old said that he is ready to put 2022 behind him.

“Well, physically I feel very good. Like you saw, I trained a lot to start at a good point in the preseason,” said of his offseason preparations. “I wanted to show that I’m good physically and mentally. I worked a lot with a trainer, not just physically but mentally too. Last year I had an injury that frustrated me a lot. I made it a point to set that aside during the offseason to be better in 2023.”

With his “brother” by his side, Revs fans should be excited to see what Borrero does on the field in 2023.

The duo of Revs newcomers will be a part of the club's plan for years to come.

The New England Revolution made newcomers Latif Blessing and Dave Romeny a part of the club’s future on Wednesday as the duo was signed to two-year deals through the 2024 Major League Soccer season with an additional one-year club option for 2025.

Blessing arrived in New England via trade on January 3rd from reigning MLS Cup Champions LAFC in exchange for $400,000 in General Allocation Money plus incentives. Through six seasons with Sporting Kansas City and LAFC, Blessing has notched 17 goals and 24 assists over 170 appearances.

Romney arrived via trade on January 5th from Nashville in exchange for $525,000 in 2023 & 2024 General Allocation Money. Through eight seasons with the LA Galaxy and Nashville SC, Romney has notched seven goals and 13 assists over 171 appearances.

Blessing and Romney will look to display their talents during the preseason, which begins on February 2nd, as the duo look to contribute to the Revolution’s success in 2023 and beyond.

After rising through the youth ranks, Borrero earns his first senior national team call up

Yet another member of the New England Revolution has been called up to their national team as Dylan Borrero earned his first senior call-up on Wednesday.

In his international career, Borrero has a combined seven international appearances for Colombia at the U-17, U-18, and U-20 levels. He will hope to earn his first senior cap when Colombia faces off against the United States Men’s National Team on January 28. The matchup will be especially interesting for Revs fans as DeJuan Jones and Borrero could face off on the pitch in their first senior international appearances.

Borrero was acquired by the Revs in April of 2022. The winger appeared in 12 games and tallied three goals and two assists in 605 minutes played.

It has been a month to remember for the Revs in terms of international call-ups as Djordje Petrovic, Jones and Borrero all earned call-ups to their senior national teams.

It is the second time he has been called into the USMNT

DeJuan Jones has earned his second-ever call up to the United States Men’s Team on Wednesday.

“We are thrilled with the group of players we’ve been able to put together for this camp,” Hudson said of the 24 players called into camp. “The annual January Camp gives us a chance to look at some real high potential young players as well as some dual nationals we have been following. The focus has been on identifying positions within our team that need more depth. We are also leaning on some of our veteran players for their experience on the field as well as to socialize the younger players into the incredible culture we have built within the squad. We know from history that many players who get their first national team opportunity in this window go on to make a World Cup roster, so we want them to make the most of it.”

Jones built off an impressive 2021 season where he had three goals and five assists. In 2022, he only had a single goal but racked up seven assists, a club record for a defender.

There will be a battle between New England Revolution teammates in the upcoming friendly’s as Djordje Petrovic was recently called into the Serbian National Team for the third time in his career. The young goalkeeper has one senior international cap, which came on January 25th, 2021 when Petrović notched a clean sheet in a friendly against the Dominican Republic.

Jones will seek to get his first cap in the upcoming friendlies for the USMNT. The United States faces Serbia on January 25th and Colombia on January 28th

The United States Women’s National Team start 2023 with a 4-0 victory over New Zealand!

The United States Women’s National Team took the field for the first time in 2023 as they faced 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup co-host New Zealand inside Sky Stadium in Wellington.

Alyssa Naher started in goal as Crystal Dunn, Becky Sauerburnn, Naomi Gira, and Emily Fox comprised the back line. Lindsey Horan, Taylor Kornieck, and Rose Lavelle composed the midfield, while Mallory Swanson, Alex Morgan, and Midge Purce provided the attack.

A golden opportunity came for the US in the 18th minute as Purce drove down the right flank and sent a ball to the middle. After pinballing off a few players, the ball fell to the feet of Horan, who found herself one-on-one with the keeper on the left side of the box.

Horan sent the shot right down the middle as New Zealand’s Erin Nayler dove to her right. Nayler’s feet were in the right place as the ball ricocheted off her legs and away from danger as she kept the US off the score sheet.

The US was awarded a golden opportunity in the 42nd as they won a free kick just yards outside the box. Swanson took the free kick as she lobbed a ball inwards as a sea of black and white uniforms swarmed the box. Horan evaded the pressure, leaped into the air, and tapped the free kick into the net to give the US a 1-0 lead. A lead that quickly dissolved as Horan was in an offside position.

Despite numerous chances throughout the first half, the USWNT entered the locker room at half tied in a scoreless bout.

Four changes came at half for the United States as Andi Sullivan, Sofia Huerta, Alana Cook, and Trinity Rodman came on for Kornieck, Dunn, Girma, and Purce.

Rodman nearly made an instant impact in the 48th as she looked to put a header on frame. Unfortunately, the header was a tad off as it went out for a goal kick.

The United States strung together some good offense in the 52nd minute as Lavelle found Rodman on the right flank. Rodman created some space and lobbed a cross to Swanson, who leaped into the air and headed the ball into the back of the net the first goal of 2023 for the US Women’s National Team.

The deal includes options through the 2025 season

The New England Revolution’s ironman isn’t leaving the club anytime soon.

Andrew Farrell and the Revs agreed to a one-year contract extension that includes two additional option years for 2024 and 2025. Farrell’s extension through the 2023 season utilized Target Allocation Money.

Farrell boasts the most regular season appearances (304), starts (301), and minutes played (26,792) in MLS since he joined New England as the first-overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. The 30-year-old has been voted the Revolution Defender of the Year five times in his career including back-to-back honors in 2021 and 2022.

Head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena highlighted Farrell’s durability when the deal was announced.

“Andrew Farrell is an important player in our team and has represented the Revolution with the utmost class throughout his decade with the club,” Arena said. “Andrew’s durability on the field and leadership in the locker room will continue to benefit our team. We are happy to reward Andrew with this new contract.”

New England’s back line will catch the attention of Revs fans with there being some intrigue regarding what Arena’s starting XI will look like. Could Henry Kessler be forced to the bench or maybe fans in New England will see three center backs comprise the back line?

But Farrell is more than deserving of the extension as he has been a consummate pro on and off the field. His club legend status only continues to grow as the years go by.

He’s also excited for sushi

Dave Romney is a California boy through and through but the center back has always found himself being pulled to the New England Revolution. It only makes sense that he is now on the team.

The Revs acquired Romney via a trade with Nashville SC this offseason. The center back will look to compete for a starting position in 2023 with New England having a decently deep back line featuring Andrew Farrell and Henry Kessler. The 29-year-old recognized that there will be a competition for minutes heading into the regular season.

“Yeah, I’m coming here to play as many games as I can, help us win trophies, and I know [Andrew] Farrell’s been a mainstay here for 10 years, he’s got over 300 appearances for the club. [Henry] Kessler’s been great the last three years, Omar [Gonzalez] brings a wealth of experience, and then we’ve got a lot of solid young guys as well, Christian [Makoun], and other draft kids, so I’m just going to play the best I can and get as many minutes as I can and hopefully get as many shutouts as we can because I don’t know, I think we have a lot of attacking fire power so if we do our job at the back, I think we have a chance to be really good this year,” Romney said.

It can be quite challenging to adopt to a new team. Luckily for Romney, he will have plenty of familiar faces to help him out.

“Yeah, it’s great,” Romney said when asked about having some friends on the team. “Bobby Wood, we were club soccer teammates when we were sixth, seventh, and eighth graders and so just growing up in Irvine, Orange County together in southern California, it was unreal to see him, for us to get to play together again since we were playing I think we were really, really good friends in like eighth grade and then he got shipped off to Germany and we were all just like, ‘wow, Bobby’s the golden child and we’re just never going to see him again,’ so for us to get to be teammates again, it’s honestly surreal, and then I know [Matt] Polster, I know Ema [Boateng], Omar [Gonzalez], I got to play with him in LA, and so it’s been fun getting a reunion with a lot of friends and teammates I’ve had in the past.”

Even when at Nashville, Romney was keeping tabs on New England.

“I mean it’s been ups and downs,” Romney said when asked about his impression of the Revs after leaving Nashville. “2021 was such an amazing year, and I’ve always been watching this team closely because of Bruce [Arena] and then Ema [Boateng] was my roommate in LA for four years and so I was always just keepings tabs on him and stuff like that and he was telling me the vibes of the locker room and then I was close with Jalil [Anibaba] in Nashville and Teal [Bunbury] even last year, so I feel like I always had a little kind of connection here and kind of liked a lot of the players here and stuff like that. Even [Matt] Polster, we were in a national team camp together, so I would always watch them. I thought they were a solid team, played good soccer, and kind of had some breaks in 2021, and then unlucky last year, but yeah, I don’t know, I’m just happy to be here honestly.”

If New England is winning and Romney is playing well in 2023, Revolution fans will be more than happy.
