Farrell's role 2014

Let me first say I'm not really a fan of the beard, but I am a fan of how Andrew plays. Last year's number one overall draft pick Andrew Farrell made an immediate impact with the Revs. His speed, strength, defending skills, and his ability to run with the ball made him a regular starter in Heap's s main 11. Alongside the defender of the year Jose Goncalves, Farrell played a crucial role in anchoring down one of the best defenses in the league. I am aware of the criticism surrounding his crossing ability, but let me remind you he recently turned 21 years old and I have no doubt that aspect of his game will improve. This preseason coach Heaps has tinkered with his role and he's seen time at center-back and center defensive mid (a serious hole in the Revs squad). While I dont really see him moving anywhere besides right-back permanently I do believe his versatility in these positions will be key for us this year. I dont see him as a center-back as we already have Goncalves, Soares, McCarthy and Barnes as depth in that position. That takes us to defensive mid... I dont see any transfers happening in the near future and I don't think Dorman is the answer at D-mid and we havent seen enough of Delpiccolo or Sundly (both of whom still need to make the team) to make any sound judgements. In my opinion Caldwell is still very young, and must improve his defensive efforts if he wants to be a regular. If Alston is healthy and plays at his best (he was one of the strongest defenders in MLS a few years back) and Tierney stays healthy, then I could potentially see both back positions filled while Farrell could take the D-mid spot.
