Agudelo Denied Work Permit Ahead of Stoke City Transfer

Trevor Ruszkowksi-USA TODAY Spor

Revolution striker Juan Agudelo failed to earn a work permit on Wednesday, all but ending his dreams of joining Stoke City in January.

Juan Agudelo may not join Stoke City after all.

On Wednesday morning, the Potters publically announced that Agudelo's work permit had been denied, effectively ending the 20-year-old's hopes of joining the Barclays Premier League side.

According to an article on the Stoke City website, Chief Executive Tony Scholes and manager Mark Hughes traveled to London Wednesday morning to present Agudelo's case. Immediately following, Scholes expressed shock over his team's inability to secure a permit for the Colombian-born striker, mentioning that comparable players had no difficulty gaining acceptance in the past. U.S. Internationals Geoff Cameron and Brek Shea endured seamless transitions when they joined Scholes' club last season.

Agudelo's inability to join Stoke City raises immediate questions about the striker's future. On Twitter, rumors have begun to surface about a potential transfer to Celtic F.C., as the Scottish F.A. Association functions under its own set of standards. Others believe Agudelo will return to the United States, leading Revolution fans to wonder: could the highly-touted striker return to New England, potentially on a loan basis?

The Bent Musket will break down this possibility, and several others, as the Juan Agudelo story unfolds.
