MLS SuperDraft 2013: Revolution take Donnie Smith and Luke Spencer

Joe Robbins

After making the big, flashy pick with Andrew Farrell at number one in the first round, the New England Revolution used the 21st and 23rd picks (both second-rounders) to select winger/forward Donnie Smith and target forward Luke Spencer.

With the first round in the books, the New England Revolution are ready to feast upon the remaining second-round talent. With three picks in the round, they have a chance to cast a wide net and hopefully pull in at least one meaningful contributor in the round.

With their first pick in the second round, pick 21, the Revs took Donnie Smith, a midfielder/forward out of UNC-Charlotte. Smith has been touted as an out-and-out left winger who can cut in or drive the by-line, and during the draft Alexi Lalas described him as a "banger," a guy who gives 110% effort all the time. He's left-footed, which is always a plus in the SuperDraft, and some scouts have even said that he might project as an attacking left-back in the pro ranks.

The second pick came almost immediately afterward at 23. The Revs finally decided to address forward depth issues by taking Luke Spencer out of Atlantic-10 school Xavier. Spencer scored 14 goals last season and brings an imposing 6'2", 198 lbs. frame to the striker corps. At the combine, he was seen playing with his back to goal and holding the ball up well, but still having the ability and the balance to take on players once the ball was at his feet.

The Revolution have one more pick in this draft, the 36th overall.
