After every match this season, the staff here at The Bent Musket will be putting together player ratings. Ratings are on a 1-10 scale, with 5 representing a thoroughly average performance, and 6 a decent/capable showing. The final ratings will be averages of individual ratings from Steve Stoehr, Corey Major, Matty Jollie, Abram Chamberlain, and Brendan Schimmel.
Matt Reis: Average Rating - 4.7 (Steve 4, Corey 5.5, Matty 4.5, Abram 5, Brendan 4.5)
Steve: Poor positioning on first goal, needs to be better at commanding his box and defense on set pieces...Corey: Off the line on that first goal. Had a couple good saves but wasn't a great night for the Beist...Matty: Poor positioning leads to first goal. Provides more questions than answers these days...Abram: First goal he was partially at fault, second goal he was not, nor for the third. Good, not great...Brendan: Please step up, be the leader and end the set piece nonsense.
Chris Tierney: Average Rating - 4.8 (Steve 5, Corey 5.5, Matty 4.5, Abram 4.5, Brendan 4.5)
Steve: Good corner delivery on the goal, but otherwise lacking, and apparently leading by a wide margin in giveaways...Corey: Like what I saw from Tierney. Good corner on the Revs 2nd goal. Poor service at other times though. Need better stuff on the whole from CT...Matty: Saw the good: set piece contributions, saw the bad: tackled and possession lost stat in the stratosphere...Abram: Was caught ball watching on Santos's GWG. Maybe it's time to see what Polak can offer...Brendan: Why does he always lead the team in "tackled and possession lost?" I mean they have a full time stats guy, he has to be seeing this too. Extra points for his corner kick assist.
A.J. Soares: Average Rating - 6.1 (Steve 6, Corey 7, Matty 5.5, Abram 6, Brendan 6)
Steve: Good goal, defensively sound, but 3 goals is 3 goals...Corey: Good game, very nice displays of defensive prowess. Even advanced well on the attack in the latter stages...Matty: Played well, but the score reflects giving up 3 goals...Abram: Nice to see him score did decently on the night, probably should have done better on McDonald for the opening goal...Brendan: Anytime a defender scores his game is going to be elevated. Good passing percentage on the night but I place set piece lapses on him as he is the leader on that backline.
Stephen McCarthy: Average Rating - 5.1 (Steve 5, Corey 6, Matty 4, Abram 6, Brendan 4.5)
Steve: Nothing special, needs to be more accurate with passing and size should be helping on set pieces...Corey: Seemed like a better, more comfortable game for the big man, but I'm not totally sold on him. Let's give Lozano a start or two please...Matty: Only completes half of his passes and is a liability defensively with his poor positioning and lack of foot speed...Abram: Had absolutely nothing to do with the game winning goal...Brendan: 50% passing is not great for a defender who is usually making simple passes out the back. His size needs to be start preventing goals on the set piece.
Kevin Alston: Average Rating - 5.3 (Steve 5, Corey 5.5, Matty 5, Abram 5.5, Brendan 5.5)
Steve: Positioning continues to be abysmal, but is cleaning up the rest of his game...Corey: Defense is better. positioning might be worse. Florian, get healthy, man...Matty: Getting better with his defensive responsibilities, still loses his man on set pieces...Abram: Got forward well, probably should have had an assist early on...Brendan: Quietly upping his game. 54/65 passing and a bunch of touches.
Lee Nguyen: Average Rating - 4.9 (Steve 5, Corey 5, Matty 4.5, Abram 5, Brendan 5)
Steve: Mostly invisible all night, though I remember him doing well to track back on the flank...Corey: Seemed like an off-game. The attack wasn't really clicking in general, and Lee was struggling to make a real impact...Matty: Did Nguyen play on Saturday?...Abram: Did nothing memorable good or bad...Brendan: Good connecting with Sene. He's most dangerous when he dribbles and gets a head of steam. Didn't see much of that.
Shalrie Joseph: Average Rating - 5.4 (Steve 6, Corey 5.5, Matty 5, Abram 5, Brendan 5.5)
Steve: Partly at fault for first goal, but passing was crisp and he organized well from midfield...Corey: I'm gonna keep saying it... the legs are a step too slow. Had an alright game--better when he was at CDM...Matty: With his speed getting slower, his days of advancing forward may be over. This team may have to play him at CDM, or even CB...Abram: What exactly are we doing with Shalrie? Could we maybe him again at CB again?...Brendan: 60 of 68 on the night passing. Some blame for set piece defense falls on the guy wearing the Captain's band regardless of position.
Ryan Guy: Injury precluded rating, but generally seen as somewhere around 5.
Benny Feilhaber: Average Rating - 5.8 (Steve 6, Corey 7, Matty 6, Abram 5, Brendan 5)
Steve: Delicious ball on Sene's first missed one-on-one, instrumental in first goal, made mistakes but overall a much improved performance...Corey: Had a significantly improved game. Made a huge difference once he was shifted to CAM. Heaps, come on, dawg, let's keep him in the middle. Benny even had a relatively cool head in this one, no temper tantrums...Matty: Like the prima donna he is, his play elevates once he gets put into "his" position at CAM instead of playing out of position out wide. Heaps may have to find a way to get Benny up front attacking more...Abram: The Sene goal was all Benny, but the Jakovic goal was all him too. Was also caught ball watching on the GWG...Brendan: Moments of brilliance on the ball tarnished by his moments of laziness and ball watching, especially on the GWG.
Blake Brettschneider: Average Rating - 4.5 (Steve 4.5, Corey 5, Matty 4, Abram 5, Brendan 4)
Steve: Good movement, good effort, good desire, touch and passing not there...Corey: Looked like a pretty pedestrian performance. Would have liked to see more bite against his former team. Didn't have a *bad* game though...Matty: Didn't happen for him out there. Had a tough time connecting, and seemed off on the night...Abram: Should have converted the Alston cross early on...Brendan: If you are a forward and you play most of the match and don't record a shot there is a problem.
Saer Sene: Average Rating - 6 (Steve 6.5, Corey 6, Matty 6, Abram 5.5, Brendan 6)
Steve: Should have scored more than once, but still scored. Dangerous movement, but needs to improve his touch and USE HIS RIGHT FOOT...Corey: Glad to see him get another goal, but he could have had 1 or 2 more if he could utilize his right foot. Also, giveaways are an issue...Matty: Good poacher's goal. Had trouble combining with his team mates at times. Communication an issue?...Abram: If he had any sort of a right foot, he would have easily had a hat trick on the night...Brendan: I love this man. He may tend to complicate stuff due to an aversion to use his right foot.
Fernando Cardenas (sub): Average Rating - 6.1 (Steve 6, Corey 6.5, Matty 5.5, Abram 6.5, Brendan 6)
Steve: Active, fast, always threatening, nearly scored in spectacular fashion, but needs to have more production from all that flair and energy...Corey: Very active, though also guilty of giveaways and poor decisions at times. Looks very dangerous though...Matty: Need more from him than just speedy runs down the flank. Needs to cut in more and create open spaces for the strikers...Abram: All over the place, almost converted another lob as the game winner. Want to see him starting. ¡Yo quiero mas Cardenas!...Brendan: His insertion over Rowe tells you something no? He's a wild card you play every match.
Kelyn Rowe (sub): Average Rating - 5.5 (Steve 5.5, Corey 6, Matty 5, Abram 6, Brendan 5)
Steve: Great pass to set up Moreno's flubbed chance, nearly scored the winner, not bad for a relatively short cameo...Corey: Interesting sub choice, would have thought his fresh legs would have been saved for Tuesday. Was pretty invisible until the very end. Nice shot on goal and even nicer header. Too bad there was a goalkeeper in the way...Matty: Invisible, save for his one headed chance out of nowhere...Abram: Might have earned some more minutes. Hamid was on his head to rob Rowe of the equalizer...Brendan: Bill Hamid destroyed his chance at what could have been an epic comeback sparked by a 90th minute equalizer off his header.
Jose Moreno (sub): Average Rating - 4.3 (Steve 4, Corey 4, Matty 4.5, Abram 4.5, Brendan 4.5)
Steve: Scuffed a clear chance, looked rusty, but the hunger was there...Corey: Kind of a dud...Matty: I think his value is in the hold up play, but he also might be one of those guys that has to start a match and create the tempo. He looked unsettled coming off the bench...Abram: He'll be match fit this month. Right?...Brendan: (Searching for WD-40).
