After every match this season, the staff here at The Bent Musket will be putting together player ratings. Ratings are on a 1-10 scale, with 5 representing a thoroughly average performance, and 6 a decent/capable showing. The final ratings will be averages of individual ratings from Steve Stoehr, Corey Major, Matty Jollie, and Abram Chamberlain. Brendan Schimmel is sitting this week out.
Matt Reis: Average Rating - 4.5 (Steve 4.5, Corey 5, Matty 4.5, Abram 4)
Steve: Reis is still a cornerstone for this squad, but his mistake was a major cause of the first goal. Needs to take control of his defense on set pieces...Corey: Not his best night. Starting to wonder if his organization and positioning is playing a big part in our set-piece issues...Matty: Okay, I'll be the guy to say it: Matt Reis' form is worrisome. Once again slow off the line and an easy header goes in...Abram: While McCarthy will get blamed for the last goal, Reis was in poor position to stop the late equalizer where he was beat near post.
Chris Tierney: Average Rating - 5 (Steve 5, Corey 5, Matty 5, Abram 5)
Steve: Average performance...Corey: Pretty quiet game but got himself involved. Need him to get back to being awesome on set pieces...Matty: Better defensively, need more impact on set pieces...Abram: Early in the season people were scared of Tierney's free kicks. He has seemed to regress slightly almost to the point where I'm wondering if Tyler Polak shouldn't be given a shot.
A.J. Soares: Average Rating - 5.875 (Steve 6, Corey 6, Matty 5.5, Abram 6)
Steve: Coped well with the size and physicality of Bruin and Ching, stuck up for his teammates...Corey: Still a good game, despite Houston's 2 goals, had his hands full with Ching and Bruin...Matty: He can't do it all alone, but he's certainly trying to...Abram: Did a good job of keeping up with two very big bodied forwards. A few moments where he came to the aid of his teammates making me once again see him wearing the armband in the not too distant future.
Stephen McCarthy: Average Rating - 4.75 (Steve 4, Corey 5.5, Matty 4.5, Abram 5)
Steve: Infuriating how he looks so good right until he directly concedes a goal. Schoolboy error on second goal, but he wasn't the only one to blame...Corey: Also did well to handle Ching/Bruin, but loses points for his hesitation on the late goal. Played confidently to start the game, but looked more panicked when the Revs were in grind-it-out mode...Matty: The bad is starting to outweigh the good...Abram: Yes he was partially to blame for the last equalizer, but the opening of the game was strong.
Kevin Alston: Average Rating - 5.625 (Steve 5, Corey 6, Matty 6, Abram 5.5)
Steve: On his way to an excellent match, and then goes way out of position and ball-watches on second goal. Basic error...Corey: Still playing better on defense, which is priority number 1. Still scratching my head every time i see him in the middle of the pitch though. Needs to help spread the field on the attack. Can't have him AND Benny pinching in all the time...Matty: Playing much better defensively and really starting to understand his role...Abram: Alston also escaped criticism over the equalizer. He was out of position...again. Still, not a horrendous outing from Kevin.
Lee Nguyen: Average Rating - 5.875 (Steve 6, Corey 6, Matty 5.5, Abram 6)
Steve: Tricky and smooth on the ball, though obviously affected by the physical play...Corey: Was spreading the Houston back-line all night. Great at finding space, controlling long balls, and holding up possession in the final third. Maybe didn't net 2 goals in this one, but still had a great match...Matty: Caused trouble for Houston on the night, showed good composure, although you could really see how much the physical play affected him...Abram: Not exactly what everyone was hoping for after the last outing, but a solid effort from a player who was beaten up all night by Houston. His buildup was partially responsible for Sene's penalty.
Ryan Guy: Average Rating - 5.25 (Steve 5, Corey 5.5, Matty 5.5, Abram 5)
Steve: Not good, not bad, had a good shot but was never going to be totally comfortable trying to be Clyde Simms...Corey: Tough to mimic what Clyde Simms does, which is what Heaps asked of him. Did a good job, but prefer him being more attack-minded. Showed his versatility well though...Matty: Good game from Ryan in a tough fill-in role he's not used to...Abram: Not completely sure why he was playing as a defensive midfielder.
Shalrie Joseph: Average Rating - 5.75 (Steve 6, Corey 6, Matty 5.5, Abram 5.5)
Steve: Solid, physical presence when needed, filling a more subdued role in controlling the midfield...Corey: Still looks a bit slow at times, but passed well and kept things flowing. Would have preferred to see him at CDM in this one...Matty: Passing was better, controlled the flow in a difficult midfield...Abram: Probably would have made more sense to switch Joseph and Guy.
Benny Feilhaber: Average Rating - 5.375 (Steve 5, Corey 5.5, Matty 5, Abram 6)
Steve: Good on the ball, but his petulance is starting to hurt the team and his performances are suffering...Corey: Looks good at times, looks out-of-sync at other times. Seems that Heaps is insisting that Benny play the RM role, so he's got to start embracing it...Matty: Some good, some bad, lots of temper tantrums...Abram: Benny has been looking better, however, he needs to learn to remain calm. His hot head will undoubtedly lead to a yellow card suspension before the season is up.
Blake Brettschneider: Average Rating - 5.875 (Steve 6, Corey 5.5, Matty 6, Abram 6)
Steve: Could be credited with an assist on Sene's second, nothing flashy but did the hard work and did it well...Corey: Out of his last three games, this was probably his worst, but still put in a solid effort. Helped spark the Revs' second goal...Matty: My kind of player. Does all the little things and gets his uniform dirty...Abram: Where was this guy at the beginning of the season? His pressure on the defense led to Sene's second goal. Will be interesting to see what happens when Jose Moreno is back to match fitness.
Saer Sene: Average Rating - 7.375 (Steve 7.5, Corey 7, Matty 7.5, Abram 7.5)
Steve: Goals win matches, and Sene scores them. Needs to do a little more with hold-up play, though, as Heaps noted after the match...Corey: Becoming one of the forwards in MLS that teams need to prepare for. Can be really dangerous sometimes. Looks sloppy on occasion though. Seems to need some time to get going, and still gets gassed at the end of games. Still waiting to see a solid 90 minutes from him, but I ain't complaining...Matty: Goals win matches, and the Frenchman does nothing but score lately...Abram: Best. Revs. Forward. Since. Twellman.
Diego Fagundez (sub): Average Rating - 4.5 (Steve 5, Corey N/A, Matty 4, Abram N/A)
Steve: Looked good, daring, dangerous, but not a lot of time and a little rusty...Matty: WHY are we bringing in an undersized teenager into an increasingly chippy and physical match of grown men?
Fernando Cardenas (sub): Average Rating - 5 (Steve 5, Corey N/A, Matty 5, Abram N/A)
Steve: Fresh legs with some spark on the ball, but nothing substantial...Matty: Like this guy a lot, he needs more minutes.
