The New England Revolution dropped yet another result, this one to the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night. There weren't too many standout performers, but a couple of guys put in good shifts.
Bobby Shuttleworth: Average Rating - 4.67 (Steve 4.5, Abram 4.5, Brendan 5)
Steve: Not awful, but didn't have a whole lot to do before the goal was scored, either. Better organization keeps that goal out...Abram: Absolutely should have gotten to the cross which led to the game-winning-goal. Had little to no control over his box...Brendan: Saw a lot of action and had to deal with some sloppyness in the box. One mistake costs us the goal.
Kevin Alston: Average Rating - 5.17 (Steve 5, Abram 5.5, Brendan 5)
Steve: Solid on the left, got no favors with an inexperienced Purdie ahead of him, though that shows his reliance on the assistance of his winger in defense...Abram: People really want to hate Alston, I'd say he's been very solid on the left. Intercepted a clear Philly chance that was headed towards a streaking McInerney, several plays broken up as well, very good going forward...Brendan: Good stuff playing forward for all the haters.
A.J. Soares: Average Rating - 5 (Steve 5, Abram 5, Brendan 5)
Steve: Unremarkable but not poor, injury was inopportune to say the least. Still searching for the Soares of 2011...Abram: Overall average performance. No big giveaways, no big gaffes, just not what I hoped for...Brendan: Better from AJ, still some headers/clearances put in the wrong places.
Darrius Barnes: Average Rating - 6.17 (Steve 6, Abram 6.5, Brendan 6)
Steve: Titanic back there. Strong clearances, decisive, played very well...Abram: Like a boss. Wonder if this form will hold next year or if he'll be back on the bench...Brendan: In control, rarely exposed.
Ryan Guy: Average Rating - 4.17 (Steve 4.5, Abram 4, Brendan 4)
Steve: Not sure how much we're expecting out of a natural winger playing out of position this season after spending most of it at central mid. Settled in at right-back, then got thrown off again when moved into the middle...Abram: Not sure exactly what he was supposed to be doing out there. 5 games in 7 games will hurt anyone...Brendan: Giveaways galore, dangerous passes to the middle and two footed poke tackle? Too many shots from 30 yds out for me.
Alec Purdie: Average Rating - 3.67 (Steve 3.5, Abram 3.5, Brendan 4)
Steve: Lost early on, got better later, but was two steps slow and wasted two really, really great chances to score by making poor decisions...Abram: Hopefully this was more butterflies than it was absolute proof as to why he's been used so little this year...Brendan: Nervous, flat footed and let wingers get behind him all night. First chance on net needs to be hit first time.
Clyde Simms: Average Rating - 5 (Steve 5, Abram 5, Brendan 5)
Steve: I think the reason for his "decline" is a concerted effort by the Revs to play direct and bypass the midfield. Impact and effectiveness has decreased in direct correlation with a decrease in his touches on the ball, which also correlates to a lack of midfield play by the Revs...Abram: His early season form has slipped, had a few very smart passes, and some dumb ones as well...Brendan: Accurate passing, limited touches.
Benny Feilhaber; Average Rating - 4 (Steve 4.5, Abram 3, Brendan 4.5)
Steve: Looked creative and dangerous, but of course let his frustration get the best of him. If he was producing, it would be excusable...Abram: Not a leader. Not a smart play. Not a Rev next season?...Brendan: Good through balls per usual tarnished by petulant temper tantrums. Market value at an all-time low?
Kelyn Rowe: Average Rating - 4.5 (Steve 4.5, Abram 4.5, Brendan 4.5)
Steve: Please do not let this young man take a corner ever again. Once again, flashes of great broken up by play too slow or too telegraphed for this level...Abram: Too slow...Brendan: His corner kicks fall too short. One on one defensively he has a ways to go. Didn't help with maintaining possession.
Jerry Bengtson: Average Rating - 4.17 (Steve 4.5, Abram 4, Brendan 4.5)
Steve: SCORE...Abram: This is the second game in a row where he was wide-open and missed what was essentially a sitter. Unacceptable...Brendan: C'mon man. It hurts when all we hear is you tickling twine for Honduras and open netters are hitting the post.
Diego Fagundez: Average Rating - 4.83 (Steve 4.5, Abram 5, Brendan 5)
Steve: Should have had an assist when Bengtson missed his sitter, but offered little else...Abram: I'd rather see him used in the midfield. Didn't seem to offer too, too much...Brendan: Always want to see him beat defenders one on one.
Fernando Cardenas: Average Rating - 4.5 (Steve 3.5, Abram 5, Brendan 5)
Steve: Perhaps I'm being too harsh, but I REFUSE to acknowledge even a decent performance when a professional soccer player blows a chance like the one-on-one he had, in that fashion. Embarrassing, because he didn't even get a shot off...Abram: Had a chance that he absolutely should have gotten a shot off, nothing came of it. Like Rowe, he has the talent, but the mental speed of the game seems to overwhelm him at times...Brendan: Always changes the dynamic. Has to put away his chance earlier, got too cute instead.
Juan Toja: Average Rating - 5.33 (Steve 5.5, Abram 5.5, Brendan 5)
Steve: Heck of a lot better than his last two appearances. Nearly set up an equalizer if MacMath doesn't save Guy's header...Abram: Jumped between a 6 and a 5.5 for a bit. He should be starting at this point, passing is great, still learning the team. Not sure his role if both he and Benny are here...Brendan: I don't know where he plays or what his purpose is.
Dimitry Imbongo: Average Rating - 5 (Steve 5, Abram 5, Brendan 5)
Steve: I love the kid's enthusiasm. Wasn't given much chance to succeed in that game situation...Abram: Would have liked to see him starting up top...Brendan: Does what he is supposed to do. Satisfactory in most of his appearances.
After every match this season, the staff here at The Bent Musket will be putting together player ratings. Ratings are on a 1-10 scale, with 5 representing a thoroughly average performance, and 6 a decent/capable showing. The final ratings will be averages of individual ratings from Steve Stoehr, Abram Chamberlain, and Brendan Schimmel. Corey Major and Matty Jollie had to sit this one out.
